Traveling to Indonesia: How to plan the itinerary (step-by-step) and how much it costs

Traveling to Indonesia is becoming more and more frequent among tourists from all over the world.

Tourism in Indonesia has been growing a lot!

It is an amazing destination not only because of the beautiful beaches, but for the volcanoes, treks, countless temples of various religions, wild animals, and of course, by the delightful vibe of that country and its people. They are truly kind.

Organizing a travel itinerary through Indonesia may be harder than it looks!

But we’re going to help you!

Check out here a step-by-step in how to organize the itinerary for a trip to Indonesia! And more!  All the average costs for those who want to travel through the Indonesian islands.

Below you find the contents of this post, just click if you want to be directed to any specific part:

Indonesia is not only Bali

Padar Island -Komodo Island-Indonesia

Padar Island – Komodo

If Indonesia has so many beautiful things to see and do, why do the most tourists only visit Bali?

Do you know what else this Asian country has to offer besides Bali?

Perhaps you have heard of one of the largest Buddhist temples in the world, Borobudur!

Or the three tiny Gili islands, which belong to Lombok!

Or even, more recently, you must have started hearing about Komodo.

But besides Borobudur, what can I do in Yogyakarta?

If I go to Lombok, will I only visit the Gili islands?

What about Komodo? The Komodo Dragon is the only reason to visit? Or are there more things to do?

What about the Island of Flores? Have you heard of it?

Wakatobi? Do you know anyone who has visited Wakatobi?

It’s going to be hard to visit or even know everything Indonesia has to offer. After all, the country is formed by nothing less than 17,508 islands… From those, about 6000 are inhabited. If we consider the islands that disappear during the high tide, that number is twice as big!

Even if you intend to visit only the inhabited islands in Indonesia, it will be very difficult to accomplish this mission.

So, where do I start planning my trip to Indonesia?

Prambanan Temple-Yogyakarta-Indonesia

Prambanan Temple – Yogyakarta

If I convinced you already not to spend your entire vacation in Bali, you might be wondering now how to plan a trip to a country with over 17000 islands. Am I right?

How to choose from so many wonderful destinations?

I asked myself the same question and it was not easy to choose my destinations.

If you have little time and prefer to save on your trip, I advise you to search very carefully where you want to go – and most importantly, how to get there – before starting planning your trip.

As we already know, Indonesia is formed by islands, and therefore transportation by land is not possible between one place and another, leaving you with two or sometimes just one option.

Between nearby islands, you can travel by boat (but it may take a long time – even days) or by plane. For more distant islands your only option is to fly. But even so, there are not always direct flights from one island to another. So thinking about the logistics of your itinerary is important from the beginning.

So, let’s go to the step-by-step in how to plan your trip to Indonesia.

Organizing the itinerary for your Indonesia trip

Tanah Lot Temple-Bali-travel to Indonesia

Tanah Lot Temple – Bali

1st Step – Wishes:

Make a list of all the possible places you would like to visit. Start paying attention to the location of that beautiful photo you saw on Instagram or that inspiration from Pinterest and start listing all the destinations you would like to visit.

Make this list based on your main interests.

What are they? Relaxing on the beaches of crystal clear water and white sand? Trekking? Enjoying the nature? Hiking volcanoes? Experiencing wildlife? Scuba diving? Temples and culture? Or maybe you are more into parties? There will be an Indonesian destination that you can fit each traveler’s style perfectly. I’m sure of it.

2nd Step – Map:

With your list in your hand, time to go to the map and see where each destination is and whether they are too far apart from each other or not.

This is very important because your budget will be the limiting factor of this trip.

Indonesia is a very cheap country to travel in general, but if you move around too much, your costs will increase considerably.

You’ll see on my cost worksheet at the end of the post that the highest percentage of expenses with our trip was on transportation. Precisely because we decided to go to more distant and less visited places. And we didn’t regret it because it was fantastic, but no doubt our journey became more expensive because of that decision.

3rd Step – Drawing:

Now that you’ve seen where each destination is and if you’re going to limit yourself to a small or large region, it’s time to play on Google Maps and draw some options.

Don’t think about dates or days available yet. Just check out the places that make sense to be included in the same itinerary.

For example, if you listed Bali and Lombok, they are very close and worthwhile to be visited on the same trip. But if you put Lombok and Sulawesi in your list, it might be harder to travel from one to the other.

Set up some draft options. You can put some more distant options too, no problem. But be aware that for more remote islands, generally, you will find direct flights only from large cities like Bali, Jakarta, and Surabaya.

Mawun Beach-Lombok-travel through Indonesia

Mawun Beach – Lombok

4th Step – Skyscanner

Time to check if your draft options are really possible and will fit in your budget.

So let’s check for flights and what their average price is. Between nearby islands (Bali – Lombok for example), boats will also be an option. Usually, this option does not pay off (we will explain an exception soon), because boats are slow and time-consuming and flights are cheap, and sometimes they are roughly the same price of a boat.

We recommend Skyscanner for this price search. You can go on listing all the possible destinations, with any date and the site returns you all the airlines and the best prices.

5th Step – The itinerary itself

Now you already know your destination preferences and if your itinerary options are plausible and especially if they are in agreement with your stipulated budget.

Have some options A, B, C for example and calculate more or less the transportation costs for each option. Then choose the one that fits more in your budget available for transportation (the other costs will not change much from place to place).

Now it’s time to give one more survey around to understand how many days you should stay in each place and then, put on paper, a screenplay itself.

Extra Tips

  • I always recommend not to stay less than two or three days in a particular place. Unless you have something specific to see in a location (as it was in our case of Mount Kelimutu). The journey will come out more expensive and tiring;
  • In a three-week plan, I’d advise about 3-4 islands at the most, so you have time to relax and discover new things there.

Our travel itinerary for Indonesia

Komodo Island-Flores-travel itinerary Indonesia

Komodo Island

We didn’t exactly follow the extra tips I put in there. We wanted to see so much that we simply planned as many places as possible, making our trip really tight.

At the end of the month, we were exhausted from so many flights and activities. But we wanted to enjoy the maximum and in the end, we visited 4 islands (I do not consider Bali because we only stopped there for one night because it was our layover anyway).

Obviously, as we also decided to move around a lot, our trip was more expensive than we usually spend on trips. A lot of commuting expenses.

We did all of this consciously, we knew it would be a lot, but we wanted an overview of some destinations and now, we know we want to go back in all of them to do more things.

Before our itinerary, I will share with you guys on what was our main interests:

Diving

Treks and hiking volcanoes;

Visit temples;

Enjoy beaches and snorkeling;

After then following all those steps that we passed through, our itinerary was as follows:

  • Wakatobi – 5 days (a full day was necessary for commuting)
  • Bali – 2 days (our layover and rest for one night)
  • Flores – 7 days (*we stayed 2 days in Moni, specifically to visit Mount Kelimutu. And then we flew to Labuan Bajo, in the Komodo region. Of the 5 days in Komodo, 4 of them were on a boat)
  • Lombok – 4 days (our main interest here was the hike to the Mount Rinjani summit, so we did not take advantage of all that Lombok has to offer)
  • Java – 3 days (only to visit Yogyakarta – the island of Java is huge and we would need at least a month to visit it)

Each destination will have a specific post with a super guide from each place.  Access one by one and find out which ones you want to visit (the posts will be published here weekly, subscribe to our newsletter at the end of the page to receive all of them in your email and you will not miss any news).

If you are too lazy to draft your own itinerary, copy ours and just take things you don’t like so much out of it (not everyone enjoys hiking volcanoes) and include something you really want to see and we didn’t (we didn’t visit any Gili Island or Nusa Penida).

On this trip, we wanted to get away from the tourist’s concentration. First of all, this is because we wanted to try new things that are not easily available online, and second, because we were traveling in high season and we knew that everything would be very crowded in the most tourist regions.

For those reasons, we took Bali out from our itinerary as well as the Gili Islands. How we would have a connection flight in Bali anyway on the way back from Wakatobi, we decided to spend one night to rest there and we gave a gift to ourselves: A stay in a luxury hotel (we deserve it once in a blue moon, right?).

That’s how our itinerary was designed… Trying to get away from the traditional.

And if before it was hard to find online information about these places, now you will find everything here, in the Mochilão a Dois Travel Blog!

Wakatobi

Tomia Island-Wakatobi-travel itinerary Indonesia

Tomia Island – Wakatobi

At some point in my life, I read that Wakatobi was a super remote destination and a diving paradise. When we started planning our trip, I knew we had to go there.

I confess it was the most expensive part of our trip, no doubt. It’s very far from Bali and the tickets are expensive (the return plane ticket was about U$200.00 per head) and also because hotel and restaurant competition is still pretty small, prices can get a little high.

So, things are not so cheap as in other parts of Indonesia. No hostels, for example, but there are some guesthouses. We ended up choosing a resort – the Wasabinua – and getting a package, with food, all dives, snorkeling, transportation between the islands and transfers. Putting everything down, it was cheaper than if we were going to do all the activities for ourselves.

Even so, the value is still quite ok, only the accommodation in Wasabinua was around US$25.00 for two people.

Diving there is divine, but the best part is that we were by ourselves all the time. It was so exclusive. During our 4 days there, we only came across a German couple. That’s it!!!

The beaches were ours, the whole ocean just for us when we went scuba diving and snorkeling too! It was worth it taking a trip that far.  We highly recommend this place for you guys who, like us, enjoy tranquility and peace!

Bali

Tanah Lot Temple-Bali-travel costs Indonesia

Tanah Lot Temple – Bali

As I mentioned, we didn’t really want to include Bali in our itinerary, so we won’t be able to give you a lot of tips on what to do over there.

But the good news is that there is a lot of good information online with amazing Bali tips. I recommend you to have a look at this article from the 7 Continents 1 Passport Blog: 7 Unmissable Places to Visit in Bali.

And of course, not far from there, there is the Amazing Nusa Penida Island, that I would love to have visited! It’s a wonderful place where you can take great photos and the best is that you can visit the whole island riding a motorbike on Nusa Penida!! I will probably include this island on my next visit to Indonesia.

And if you think that for just one or two nights you also deserve a super gift! I recommend the Hotel Tugu Bali. The period was short, but we managed to rest and enjoy the hotel very much, and I will certainly remember it for the rest of my life. We wrote about our amazing 5-star experience at the Tugu Hotel Bali.  Our backpacking life returned to “normal” the day after and, rushing to get as much done as possible, sleeping was a luxury after Tugu. So we definitely took advantage of that to replenish our energy and relax a little!

Moni – Monte Kelimutu

Mount Kelimutu-Moni-island of Flores-traveling Indonesia

Mount Kelimutu – Moni – Flores Island

The island of Flores is growing quite a lot and there is so much to do there. You can easily spend a whole month there visiting forests, communities, beautiful beaches and hiking a lot.

Our interest was specific on Mount Kelimutu, the famous volcano with three lakes in its crater. So, we went there just for that.

It is worthwhile to include more things to do there and to go by land to Labuan Bajo, visiting the whole island. We chose to visit only the volcano and, therefore, we arrived in one day and we flew again to Labuan Bajo the next day.

Labuan Bajo – Komodo

Diving-Turtle-Komodo-Flores Island-Traveling Indonesia

Turtle during our dive in Komodo

Labuan Bajo is on the island of Flores and is the base city for those who want to visit the Komodo islands (which is a national park and therefore is not possible to stay there).

We had two major interests here: Scuba diving and the Dragons.

The dive was simply the best of my life up to now. We’ve seen gigantic Manta Rays and lots of beautiful turtles.

If you do not dive, it’s still worth it to go. With a snorkel, you will already be able to see many turtles and mantas (We saw them again snorkeling during our boat trip). We recommend Divers Paradise for your diving and snorkeling adventures. They were very professional and the staff was amazing.

To visit the Dragons and other areas of the region, we decided to take a boat trip with Wanua Adventure. In 4 days, we went around several islands, swimming, and snorkeling and, in the end, we arrived in Lombok, thus avoiding another flight. It was fantastic because included in the price of the boat, besides the transport, we had lodging for 3 nights, all the meals and visits to fantastic places.

If you are staying at Labuan Bajo, you will need to pay agencies to take you to the famous islands where Komodo dragons inhabit, Komodo Island and Rinca Island. Padar Island is also worth to pay a visit with its wonderful view of the beaches below. In Labuan Bajo, we chose to stay at the Komodo Lodge and we loved it.

In fact, we have here a super gift for you, our readers. Komodo Lodge is offering 5% discount to all of our readers (Valid during 01-Sep-2018 to 30-Jun-2019 – not valid from 25-Dec-2018 to 05-Jan-2019). Lombok

Mount Rinjani-Lombok-traveling Indonesia

Conquest of Mount Rinjani Summit – Lombok

Lombok has everything! From waterfalls to volcanoes, wonderful beaches, snorkeling, diving and a lot more. But our interest here was the hike to Mount Rinjani, which we did with Hajar Trekking.

Mount Rinjani is considered the most difficult volcano to be hiked up in Indonesia and being in love with mountains as we are, we could not resist the challenge.

We spent three whole days dedicated to this mission. We had a day to spare and we used it to rent a motorbike and ride through the Island visiting the main beaches. And, let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint.

Yogyakarta

Borobudur-Yogyakarta Temple-Itinerary Indonesia

Borobudur Temple – Yogyakarta

In Yogyakarta – the royal city, our main interest was Borobudur temple.

But Yogyakarta also has a lot of amazing things to be seen. And with an extra advantage… Jogja, as it is affectionately called, is very cheap. We spent a measly US$5.00 in the best hostel I’ve ever stayed – The Patio Yogya – (and I’ve been in many) with breakfast included. We also managed to have lunch one day for US$0.80!!!!!

Of course, there are more expensive places too.

But if budget is limiting to you, I recommend extending your period on the island of Java and you will make your valuable travel money last.

Borneo – Next Time

A destination that we really wanted to go very was Borneo! It’s a rainforest island and full of orangutans.

We tried to program ourselves to visit there, but the tours in the forest are slightly pricey and we would have to commute one more time, so it ended up being unfeasible for us.

But we talked a lot with Sal from Local Guides, who gave us all the explanations and it was a lovely person. He did everything he could to try to fit us into one of the tours (which were already fully booked). He has given us so much information that we will be able to write a detailed post about Borneo soon. So who knows, maybe you can go, even if we haven’t succeeded.

What is the best time of the year to visit Indonesia?

Local market in Wangi Wangi-Watatobi- costs for an Indonesia trip

Local market in Wangi Wangi – Wakatobi

A very important point to be considered when traveling to Southeast is the time of the year you want to visit. That’s because these regions are affected by monsoons. Torrential rainfall at a certain time of the year, with even typhoons sometimes.

Although I am a fan of traveling in low season, so I can save money and have the places less crowded, it is not worth going to Indonesia with an unprecedented rain, or you will be stuck in the hotel.

So avoid traveling to Indonesia from November to March. Indonesia is in the southern hemisphere and has, therefore, it’s winter in July which is the best time to visit. Dry, milder temperatures and plenty of sunshine.

Attention here when trying to visit Indonesia and Thailand, for example, on the same trip. Almost all the other countries in Southeast Asia are in the northern hemisphere and therefore have their rainy season at different times.

So there is no point in going to Indonesia and Thailand on the same trip because you will get rain on one or the other. You can visit Singapore for example. Or stay all your time in Indonesia, yet I guarantee you’ll still be in the mood for more.

Visa for Indonesia

For the majority of the countries, 169 of them, a visa for tourism purposes is not needed. For the most of the countries, you can stay for 30 days in Indonesia. If you need more time, then you will need to apply for a visa. For the countries not listed, visa-on-arrival is available in all international airports and costs US$35.00 (information checked on Aug-2018).

Check all 169 countries that don’t need a visa to visit Indonesia e and information on how to obtain one, in case you need to stay more than 30 days: Wonderful Indonesia website.

How much does a trip to Indonesia cost?

Sunrise in Borobudur-Yogyakarta-costs of a trip to Indonesia

Sunrise in Borobudur – Yogyakarta

We finally arrived in the part that everybody wants to know: What are the costs of a trip to Indonesia?

Of course, as always, costs will depend on your travel style, but I will try to show here an average of the general costs in Indonesia. All you have to do is extrapolate the costs to your style, to the places you will visit and to the number of days you’ll be traveling.

As you already know, we always try to travel on a budget. But, for this trip, we made some more expensive choices. If you are traveling on a budget, I recommend avoiding them:

What we did that you can avoid in order to save money

  1. We moved around a lot, going from one island to the next. That made our budget go up a lot on this trip. Besides, we went to Wakatobi, which is very far away. If you need to save money, choose the nearest islands and try to stay in one place longer. Your journey will be much cheaper than ours;
  2. Some activities are naturally more expensive. Get to know your interests and assess whether these activities are worthwhile. We recently started diving and we want to dive everywhere now! But scuba diving is an expensive activity. If you don’t have the open water course or don’t want to dive, snorkeling is much cheaper and you can already see a lot of marine life. In Komodo, the people who were snorkeling actually saw even more turtles than we did while diving;
  3. Another point that I only realized later. We booked all our accommodation in advance, but I noticed there are many homestays all over Indonesia and they are cheaper than Hostels in general. But you won’t find homestays on booking.com for example. So if you are traveling, have the time, and do not bother to search for lodging when arriving, you will probably find good options. I had this experience in Komodo and Moni. Bali or Yogyakarta I found good prices in hostels due to the very high competition.

So, let’s talk about some of the overall costs in Indonesia
< h3>International Transportation – Getting to Indonesia

Rice fields in Bali - traveling Indonesia

Rice fields in Bali

First, you need to get to Indonesia. And that’s probably the most expensive cost if you are leaving from anywhere outside Asia. To find cheaper tickets, I strongly recommend the use of Skyscanner.

Instead of looking for (your origin)-Bali for example. Search for your origin – anywhere in the world and put your dates.

Filter by Price (lowest first).

The site will give you all the ticket options coming out of your origin and with the cheapest prices first.

Then select which destinations close to Indonesia are at the best prices. The chance of the best ticket being for Bangkok or Singapore is great (since they are airports that are investing a lot in bringing customers there).

Then just go back into the Skyscanner and see the price of the destination selected to your destination in Indonesia (usually Bali or Jakarta, because they are the largest airports, but you can travel directly to other destinations such as Yogyakarta or Lombok if you want to start your trip at these places).

See if the sum of the two tickets really ends up being cheaper than the ticket your origin – Bali for example. I can assure you that usually, you’ll be able to save a few quid on that ticket.

Domestic Transportation – Getting around Indonesia

Tomia Island - Wakatobi -travel itinerary for Indonesia

Tomia Island – Wakatobi

That was the part that made our trip a little pricey. Because we moved a lot between islands.

Between the islands

I will always recommend you to buy the tickets in advance to make sure that there will be seats available on the flight, but overall, the prices do not go up as the date approaches. We needed to buy tickets for the next day while we were there (we wanted to go from Moni to Labuan Bajo by bus and not by plane, but the price was almost equal so we ended up flying) and the price was the same as if we had bought the tickets in advance. But we took the last seats (luckily).

Some companies were not very good, like Lion Air. But it works well and that’s what matters. But Garuda Indonesia is excellent and they have snacks on board. If the prices are similar, choose Garuda.

All local flights have baggage included, which helped us a lot.  Since we carry 7Kg only from our photographic equipment, we always need to check-in at least one backpack. Flights from Air Asia do not have baggage included and we needed to pay for checking-in one bag.

At the end of this post, there is a spreadsheet with our expenses for you to have a good idea. But in general, flights between very close islands, tickets will cost around US$20.00 (Lombok and Bali for example), between islands a little farther around US$50 – US$70,00 (Bali and Moni) and between remote islands around US$100.00 (Bali – Wakatobi). All prices are for a one-way ticket.

Within the islands

There are some public transportation or taxi options within the Islands. I recommend downloading Grab (the Uber in Southeast Asia) and GoJek (an Uber motorcycle taxi), both options are cheaper than a normal taxi.

But I still think the best option to transport all over Asia is to rent a scooter. Learn how to drive one before your trip and you will have the freedom to do whatever you want and spend little money. Overall, we paid less than US$5.00 on the scooter rental per day (for two people) and a lot less than that in gasoline, depending on how much we drove.

Just be careful. There are lots of bikes everywhere and traffic laws are not really followed. Drive carefully! We saw some people hurt because they fell off the bike.

Accommodation

Wasabinua Resort-Wakatobi-costs of a trip to Indonesia

Wasabinua Resort – Wangi-Wangi – Wakatobi Islands

The range of prices for accommodation is quite broad! But if you like to travel with comfort, Southeast Asia is your chance to stay in excellent hotels and paying very little.

Prices will also depend on how much touristic is the destination. In Bali, you will find all kinds of possible prices and some extremely affordable. In Wakatobi, the demand is less and only resorts or homestays are available.

Komodo has grown quite a lot, but even so, there were only two hostels options, in the range of US$15.00 per person, which I found expensive for a hostel in Asia. We decided to stay in a B&B for US$20.00 per person, which was much closer (the Hostels were far from the city center), with breakfast and transfer from the airport included. We thought it was worth it. But when we were there, we saw loads of guesthouses, certainly with prices more attractive than the Hostels.

Booking.com

The best price we paid for accommodation was in Yogyakarta, US$5.00 per person with breakfast. Amazing! And it was the best hostel ever!!

In general, you will find hostels with shared-dorms ranging from US$5.00 to US$15.00 depending on the location you visit; B&B with great comfort in the range of US$20.00 per person. And, of course, very expensive 5-star hotels with surreal comfort. We had this experience in Bali!

Food

Indonesian beach-How much does it cost to travel to Indonesia

Nusa Tenggara Barat – Between Flores and Lombok Islands

We didn’t spend much money with food in Indonesia. First, because we got some packages with food included (in Wakatobi, on Monte Rinjani’s tour, on the boat tour between Labuan Bajo and Lombok and at the Hotel Tugu in Bali). But prices for food in Indonesia are very interesting. With the exception of airports, of course.

We went to some street markets and spent around US$5.00 to US$10.00 for both of us. Our cheapest meal was at Borobudur, in Jogja. We spent US$0.80 on our lunch at Borobudur.

Activities

Snorkeling in Wangi-Wangi-Wakatobi-traveling in Indonesia

Snorkeling in Wangi-Wangi – Wakatobi

Activities are where we are most willing to spend money on. After all, a trip is made of experiences!

Dives

We did some diving in Indonesia. Four in Wakatobi and three in Komodo. The dives in Indonesia cost around US$35.00 each, with everything included, equipment rental, boat and meals (breakfast and lunch usually). We had a discount on Wakatobi because we got a daily package so I can not tell exactly how much was each dive there in the end.

The prices of dives are cheaper than in Thailand (where we paid around US$50.00 per dive) and cheaper than most parts of the world. We did not check the costs to take certification there, but if you feel like taking the diving course and will have time on your trip, I recommend doing it there. I know it’s a lot cheaper than in other countries and the dives were really amazing. Much better than the ones in Thailand.

If you do not dive, you can go snorkeling! I highly recommend it. I can not tell the prices because we didn’t do it, but it is already much cheaper and also usually includes the equipment, meals and the boat transfers. I saw surreal videos of turtles made on the snorkel.

Don’t forget your travel Insurance! It’s really important on a trip to Indonesia. Use the coupon MOCHILAOADOIS5 and get 5% discount.

Volcanoes

We also spent a lot on our tour to Monte Rinjani. In the specific post, we’ll explain why we decided to pay for the tour and why we chose our agency.

But I’ll advise you upfront, to be very careful when evaluating this tour and what you think is cheap may cost you a lot. We bumped into a lot of people barely getting to the summit because they were out of energy and their tour didn’t offer much food. We had to share our food with a lot of people up there. That’s why we advise you to evaluate very carefully the tours operators or even the option of going by yourself. The company we hired was fantastic and I am really happy we chose them.

Safety should always come first!!

Regarding the entrance fee for temples and beaches, the costs are cheap. The only very expensive temple will be the Borobudur (US$25.00), but you can buy the combo with the Prambanan (US$40.00 both).

Temples in Bali or other locations were ranging from US$2.00 to US$5.00. Sometimes less.

For beaches, there was usually a parking fee and it was around US$2.00. And I actually found the prices of meals and drinks not very expensive on some well-tidy beaches. In Lombok, we paid about US$5.00 for lunch and drinks in a super nice place.

Costs Worksheet

Our cost spreadsheet for the entire trip through Indonesia for 20 days is bellow in Excel format.

And there is a gift for you. It’s available for you to download and use it on your next trip. Download it in this link. All the functions I use, even the graph are already there. Do not edit the grey-painted cells (where the functions are) and edit the other fields with your travel information! It will be much easier for you to calculate the costs of your next trip!

We had some partnerships on this trip, but the prices below exclude partnerships, reflecting the actual price you would pay. We also did not include Hotel Tugu (we partnered with them and the normal cost is much higher than we could afford), and we only stayed there to rest and we didn’t visit Bali at all. But I included an average value of a hostel in Bali in that same region instead.

In the graph below, you can see where we spent more (in transportation), and therefore, where it is possible to save more money.
